November Athlete of the Month – Rob Adams

  1. In general, what is your background? Age, Occupation?

I am originally from PA the son of an FBI agent.  As a result, I moved around quite a bit as a kid and several times as well as an adult. Have lived in PA, AL, OH, IN and VA.  I am an Electrical Engineer by trade, worked in Television Glass (OI), Industrial Diamonds (GE) and today leading Operations for American Woodmark producing Kitchen and Bath cabinets.

2. How did you get to know about Catoctin CrossFit and why did you start?

I believe if my memory serves me, I first heard about Catoctin CrossFit from Dave Stup (Mr. Burpee himself) and Rob and Debbie Green.  At the time I started there I was doing my best to train for sprint triathlons with my wife Nancy and was becoming increasingly tired of running, etc.  Being a former wrestler Catoctin CrossFit was very interesting to me and has proven to be a great choice.

3. What has Catoctin CrossFit changed about your life other than a new workout routine?

Catoctin CrossFit has had a meaningful and positive impact on my life.  Over the past 7+ years I have learned so much about fitness, nutrition, and overall wellness.  The commitment, challenge and comradery of the gym is awesome.  We have developed lasting friendships and a lasting commitment to fitness.

4. What motivates you and keep you coming back to Catoctin every day?

I am generally ā€œmotivatedā€ each day on a group text from workout partners.  Continued fitness and the everyday challenges keep me coming back.  The hour+ I spend at the gym allows me to escape from work and other responsibilities; does wonders to improve my attitude and outlook for the day.

5. What advice would you give someone thinking about trying a class at Catoctin CrossFit?

In terms of advice ā€“ I am a huge CrossFit advocate and promote CrossFit to anyone willing to listen.  The program offers a lasting and challenging fitness program.  Regardless of fitness level I would suggest you start slow, be deliberate and attentive to learning new movements the ā€œright wayā€. Set a goal to learn all movements whether Olympic lifting or gymnastics.  Take advantage of our great coaching.

6. What Goals have you set for yourself in 2021?

For 2021/2022 I want to focus on accessory work, its foundational and will enable me to continue CrossFit for years to come.

7. Favorite CrossFit moment so far?

Favorite moment, tough one ā€¦probably achieving a movement for the first time, Ring & Bar Muscle Ups. But everyday provides a favorite moment getting through a challenging workout!  Seeing the success of others, during the Open or in a competition is good fun.  Really enjoy Sunday open gyms.

8. Favorite and least favorite type or workout or movement?

My favorite movements are gymnastics or body weight; least favorite is easy ā€“ Overhead Squats ā€“ challenging and difficult for me ā€¦In terms of Workout types ā€“ really enjoy an AMRAP and versions with buy-in/buy-out ā€“ the variety is great!

9. If you had to teach a class on one thing, what would it be and why?

I would teach a class on Leadership.  Leading and developing teams is rewarding and a key element of success.

10. If you could be on a reality TV show, what would it be and why?

Probably the amazing race ā€¦I have had the pleasure of traveling all over the world ā€“ combine that with a competitive environment would be awesome!

SCOTT

Staying active and healthy has always been important to me. I was a dancer, a swimmer, I worked at a gym in College, trained in boxing, jumped into running and sprint triathlon. My fitness ADD settled on the perfect balance of CrossFit and Yoga.
Iā€™m also in Public Relations, so being a Yoga Instructor is the perfect combination of doing the two things I am most passionate about ā€“ health and wellness, and people.
