- In general, what is your background? Age, Occupation?
I am 26 years old I have a supportive partner named Mikala and have two precious children Kailah and Kai. I am an enrolled member of the federally recognized tribe of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians in Atmore Alabama. I grew up on the reservation much of my life and recently moved to Virginia about a year and half ago to help manage and assist my tribeās government contracting business PCI Government Services.
- How did you get to know about Catoctin CrossFit and why did you start?
When I was younger, I always enjoyed watching the CrossFit games but never had an opportunity to be properly introduced to the sport because of where I lived. I wanted to do something challenging and rewarding and get my wind back. I googled gym near me and CrossFit Purcellville, the team reached out and was very welcoming.
- What has Catoctin CrossFit changed about your life other than a new workout routine?
It has aided in helping rehab some old sport injuries I had growing up, muscle injuries that I felt would never regain proper functionality are now stronger than when I started. I think it has also made me more confident and has improved the mentality I have when approaching any challenge throughout my day.
- What motivates you and keep you coming back to Catoctin every day?
It is that feeling of accomplishment. That warrior attitude you get after beating a PR or conquering a challenging WOD. That post workout exhaustion where your body feels defeated but, in your mind, rewarded. Also, the community that surrounds it, everyone just wants to be better and see each other succeed. Best gym in Purcellville!
- What advice would you give someone thinking about trying a class at Catoctin CrossFit?
Understand it will take some time to learn everything BUT results come very quickly. Not every lift comes naturally. Stick with it and I promise the issues slowly work themselves out. Do not be discouraged by how much weight the person beside you is throwing around or how fast they are running through a workout. Do what works best for you modify if you have too and have fun. Another major asset to having a successful experience is to be coachable because it only makes you better.
- What Goals have you set for yourself in 2023?
I would really love to improve the approach to my diet and sleep schedule. The Coaches here have an awesome program Iāve seen many have success with! I think the biggest goal for myself is to strive to be better then yesterday. As far as fitness goals, I want to be able to kick up on the wall for handstand pushups, figure out the magic behind double under, do a bar muscle up, and improve my overhead squat.
- Favorite CrossFit moment so far?
The moment you do something for the first time is always great. Being able to get all the way up the rope the first time was probably my favorite.
- Favorite and least favorite type or workout or movement?
My favorite workout is deadlifting or sled pulls/pushes. I wish wall walks never existed.
- If you had to teach a class on one thing, what would it be and why?
I think it would be on the importance of leaving behind an example for others to live by. My elders from my tribe would always say wherever you go always abide by three things Have Love in Your Heart, Be Humble, and Be Lowly in Heart. I think if we all tried to live our lives like that the world would be a better place.
- If you could be on a reality TV show, what would it be and why?
My son and I love watching The Floor is Lava on Netflix. I think that would be a ton fun to do with a group of friends or family.
